Testimonials

From our Students’ Parents:

I would like to thank Master Scott for the positive influence he has had on my son Conner. A year ago Conner did not like school and struggled with his grades. Today Conner is on track to make A honor roll. We have also seen a great change in his attitude and respect for others, but even more so in the level of respect for himself.  LifeSkills Martial Arts has tought him in a caring Christian enviroment to be the very best young man he can be and I thank Scott and Renee for the positive influence they have had on my child.  I would recommend their school to anyone.

Geral Ester, father of Conner, 13

“Our son Drew joined LifeSkills in October of 2008 and since joining he has gained numerous skills, both mentally and physically. Drew has become a very dedicated student, and he is more outgoing than ever before. He has made friends that will last a lifetime, and thanks to Mr. Scott, he has gained very important life skills that he will continue to use, not only when practicing martial arts, but throughout his day-to-day life. Mr. Scott has helped Drew build character, strength, and self-confidence that he did not have before he started taking martial arts. The LifeSkills studio is a very positive environment and we are so pleased that our son is a part of the program.”

Rick and Mekesha Sturgill, parents of Drew, 12

“LifeSkills is more than learning martial arts. It truly teaches the students skills they need to succeed in life. My son has improved in his listening skills and focus in only two months. I am very relaxed with Scott training my son because he is a good Christian. I like the relaxed family atmosphere.”

Kristina Faw, mother of Mason, 4

“We have been looking for an activity to help our son focus and expel his energy. We tried baseball, soccer, gymnastics… None of these seemed to work. We saw the ad for LifeSkills and wanted to give it a try. In karate, he stays motivated, more focused, and works hard. LifeSkills is a Christian-based, family oriented organization that offers discipline, structure and accountability, which is what our son needs. The Matheny’s are always willing to help with scheduling, or questions, with a positive attitude. Our son loves his classes! LifeSkills, you rock!”

Donna Poole, mother of Timothy, 7

Thank you Mr. Scott Matheny for the outstanding learning experience you and your LifeSkills Martial Arts school has given to my son. With positive teaching and in a controlled manner the class is led by Chief Instructor Mr. Scott Matheny. He has created an inviting environment for my son to experience success in the martial arts. Mr. Matheny, through his rapport with the students, his experience in the martial arts and teaching of the martial arts, builds not only the skill level of students but also their personal confidence and self-esteem. He has earned the respect of my son and my son is excited about learning the discipline of the martial arts. I have also seen the influence his instruction has had on students that attend our school.

Joey Ortiz, Principal, Wilkes County School

“I have been very impressed with Mr. Matheny’s teaching style. He balances encouragement and enthusiasm with discipline and expecting the most from his students. My son has really enjoyed his lessons and it has helped with his concentration at school as well as boosting his self-esteem.” Dr. Julie Koch, Wilkes Pediatric Clinic

LifeSkills has helped to transform my children into well-mannered young men. People comment about them answering “yes ma’am and “yes sir”. This program has really improved their self-confidence and has given them goals to reach for. All I have to do is tell them I will let Mr. Matheny know if they do misbehave or don’t treat each other well. Having a positive environment for my children has helped tremendously with their focus and character.”

Martha Combs, mother of Logan, 10 and Marshall, 8

"The confidence and discipline that my son has shown since earning his first belt has been amazing. The skills that Master Scott has been teaching have given him realistic goals to reach for and a continuous drive to constantly improve himself and his skills. It has been a great experience.” Brandie Byrd, mother of Landen, 12

“My son, Joshua, had been interested in learning karate for several months. I had not checked into schools, but every time we drove past LifeSkills, I felt drawn to call them. I finally did, and I am very glad I did. Joshua loves his classes and I can see a difference in him in just the 5 months he has been attending. Scott is an awesome instructor! This is the first thing he has really stuck with. I am so glad Wilkes County has a fine person like Scott instructing our children!" Lilian Baity, mother of Joshua, 11

“My grandson enjoys the karate classes. As a grandparent, I like to see the attention and focus he is able to give to the class. He also learns to respect others and be responsible for his own learning. This is a wonderful way to build self-esteem and confidence in his own abilities.”

Rene Dills, grandmother of Jonah, 7

“I think you are doing a great job. I am really glad I brought my grandson here. He really likes it. I tell everybody where you are at.”

Faye Shumate, grandmother of Dalton, 9

LifeSkills is a great program for children. It has taught Cameron discipline as well as simple techniques to use to protect himself from strangers. He loves coming here and learning new things each week while expanding on skills already learned.”

From our Students:

“LifeSkills Martial Arts has changed my life for the best. Scott and Renee Matheny are wonderful, family-oriented people who are full of joy every day. They make you feel as if you are a part of their family. So, being as welcoming as they and their business are, there is a lot of welcoming and positive energy every time I walk into the studio.
I have not done any kind of exercise or workouts of any type in so many years, but I have been wanting to. Sometimes, it’s just really hard to get motivated enough to go and do anything, especially after a long day at work. But I came into the studio one day just to ask some questions. I ended up staying and actually going through one of their different classes that they offer and I loved it!
After taking these classes for a few weeks, I have noticed a huge difference in myself. Before, I felt tired and restless almost every day. I felt it in the morning, at night and sometimes all day. Now, I feel energized all day. I have learned a few tricks from Mr. Matheny that also help give me energy. Things like breathing properly or a breathing technique can instantly make you faster and think more clearly. We also do lots of different stretching every week. That improves my sleeping, the back pains that I used to have and so much more.
The greatest thing to me that I appreciate the most are all the different skills that I am learning every time I go to class. The fact of knowing that I can protect myself in many different situations is such a confidence booster. I feel a lot safer than I ever have. I don’t feel nervous in a big crowd or walking by a group of guys that look like gangsters. But even other people notice a glow about me that I can’t even explain.
I feel happier, I feel less stressed out no matter the situation, I am in better shape, and I am more alert. LifeSkills Martial Arts has done wonders for me."
Tipton Castleberry, Tipton’s Bar-B-Que

My whole family has a great time with Mr. Matheny. He is a great teacher and it really is fun and plus it’s really good exercise. We recommend it to everyone.”

The Richardson Family; Dad, Mom, and 3 Sons ages 11, 7 and 5

“We really enjoy our martial arts classes. It is good exercise and besides being a good stress reliever, I know that I am learning defense techniques that will be beneficial in the event of an emergency. There is something for our entire family to participate in from the youngest, who is 7, to the oldest, who is 54. Male or female, we all enjoy our training! Several of us have had training before, and speaking from that perspective, Mr. Matheny is an excellent instructor that I am proud to call “my sensei”. Mr. Matheny and his wife, Renee made us feel like part of this dojo family from the very first day.”

Sylvia Mills; 3 generations work out together: Grandma, Dad, Son and Aunt

I like it! It’s really good and cool! I am learning a lot of stuff.”

William Yelton, age 5

“Very good class, well organized and thought through. You could go far with Mr. Matheny.”

Andrew Wyatt, 12

“When I was told that I was trying karate I thought that it was just people bashing each others’ brains in. I enjoyed the first class and joined and learned that it was more than just fighting. It was also a good workout, to help control anger and keep a good motivation toward a goal.”

Duncan Billings, 14

“I heard about this from my friend who said that he had a great time here. At first I just wanted to learn how to fight (defend myself). But then I had a fun time here. It’s a great place to hang out with friends.”

Daniel Crase, 13

“I really like it! It is a lot of fun! I really like grappling class! Mr. Scott is a good coach!”

Deedra Johnson, age 9

“At LifeSkills Martial Arts, Mr. Scott doesn’t let you fool around. He is a master that will teach you but will discipline you at the same time, like not letting you slack off which will help you get a black belt.”

Landen Byrd, 12

“The classes have been a good way to stay active while learning martial arts at the same time. It is a good way to teach self-control to adults and children. For myself, it is a good stress relief, and as a young woman, the classes teach me ways to protect myself, a knowledge that I can carry throughout life. And it is fun!”
